If you have Medicare in Michigan, your coverage may look a little different in 2027.
Each year, insurance companies review and update their Medicare plans. That can mean changes to monthly premiums, prescription drug coverage, provider networks, and out-of-pocket costs. Some plans may even be discontinued or become unavailable in certain areas.
With several changes taking place across Michigan for 2027, it's especially important to understand what they could mean for your coverage.
The good news? You don't have to figure it all out on your own.
What's Changing for Michigan Medicare in 2027?
According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Michigan's Medicare Advantage market is seeing several changes for the upcoming year.
Here's a quick look at the numbers:
181 Medicare Advantage plans are available in Michigan for 2027, compared to 192 in 2026.
Average monthly Medicare Advantage premiums are increasing from $14.88 to $16.21.
11 stand-alone Medicare Part D plans are available for 2027.
$0-premium Medicare Advantage options remain available throughout Michigan.
While these numbers provide a statewide overview, Medicare coverage varies by county, insurance carrier, and individual plan.
That means the changes affecting someone in Grand Rapids may look very different from those affecting someone in Traverse City or Detroit.
Is Your Current Medicare Plan Changing?
Even if you're happy with your current coverage, it's worth taking a closer look before the new year.
Some Medicare Advantage plans are leaving certain Michigan counties altogether, while others are adjusting their benefits, costs, or provider networks.
If your plan is continuing into 2027, you may be able to stay enrolled automatically. However, that doesn't necessarily mean your coverage will remain exactly the same.
A few things worth reviewing include:
Your doctors and hospitals: Are your preferred healthcare providers still in your plan's network?
Your prescriptions: Are your medications still covered, and have your costs changed?
Your out-of-pocket expenses: Have copays, deductibles, or maximum out-of-pocket limits changed?
Your additional benefits: Are dental, vision, hearing, or other supplemental benefits changing?
Small differences can add up, especially if you regularly visit specialists or take prescription medications.
Don't Ignore Your Annual Notice of Change
If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plan, you should receive an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) from your insurance company.
This document explains what's changing with your coverage for the upcoming year.
It may not be the most exciting piece of mail you receive, but it's certainly one worth opening!
Take a few minutes to review it, particularly the sections outlining changes to costs, benefits, and coverage.
If something doesn't make sense, that's a great opportunity to ask questions before making a decision.
When Can You Make Changes to Your Medicare Coverage?
Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026.
During this time, eligible Medicare beneficiaries can review their coverage and make changes for the upcoming year.
Changes made during this enrollment period generally take effect January 1, 2027.
If your plan is being discontinued or is no longer available where you live, additional enrollment options may apply.
